b10cks vs Contentful

Contentful proved headless works. It also made it expensive.

Contentful wrote the playbook for structured, API-first content, and the playbook holds up. The bill is the problem. Lite starts at €300 a month without version history. The visual editor is a separate product. b10cks gives you the same structured content with every feature in every plan.

Every feature. Unlimited editors. From €0 / month.

Where Contentful is genuinely good

They earned the reputation.

Contentful made structured, API-first content normal. A decade of enterprise deployments sits behind it, the content model is solid, and REST and GraphQL both ship in the core product. If your procurement process asks for Fortune 500 references, they have them and we do not.

  • A decade of enterprise track record
  • Structured content, done properly
  • REST and GraphQL in the core
  • A deep partner ecosystem

Where it costs you

Four things you pay extra for.

None of these are edge cases. They are the things most teams need in their first month.

01 / Edit

The visual editor is a second product.

Contentful's core editor is a form. Studio, the visual editor, is priced separately and sold separately. In b10cks the live preview is a tab, on every plan, at no extra cost.

02 / Release

Rollback starts at Premium.

Version history is not on Free or Lite. Undoing a bad edit should not be a tier. b10cks gives you the full timeline, the diff, and one-click rollback from the free plan up.

03 / Localize

Two locales, then three, then sales.

Free gives you 2 locales, Lite gives you 3. Market four onward means Premium pricing. b10cks has no locale limit on any plan, with field-level translation and inheritance.

04 / Own

Closed source, cloud only.

There is no self-hosted Contentful and no community edition to fall back on. When the price list changes, you pay it or you migrate. b10cks is AGPLv3 and runs on your own server.

Feature comparison

The Premium list, on the free plan.

Visual editor, unlimited locales, version history, scheduled publishing, comments, SSO, custom roles, audit logs, CDN, image processing and AI credits. On Contentful that list spans three tiers plus an add-on. On b10cks it is the product.

Fair is fair

If you are mid-procurement and the requirement is a vendor with a ten-year enterprise history, Contentful clears that bar and b10cks does not. If you already run a large Contentful integration, migration may cost more than it saves. Those are real reasons to stay.

We would rather you picked the right tool than the newer one.

Price comparison

€75 against €300 and a call.

Take a team that wants version history, five locales, a million API calls a month and a visual editor. On Contentful that is Lite at €300 a month, still without version history, still without the visual editor, still capped at three locales, so it becomes a conversation with an account executive. On b10cks it is Growth at €75 a month with all of it included.

Who should pick which

Pick Contentful when

  • Procurement needs a vendor with a decade of enterprise track record and Fortune 500 references
  • You already run a Contentful integration and migrating costs more than it saves
  • You use the wider ecosystem, Personalization, Studio and AI Actions, as one bundle that justifies the contract

The other side

Pick b10cks when

  • You want a visual editor without a second line item
  • You need more than three locales without enterprise pricing
  • You want version history from day one
  • You want self-hosting on the table
  • You want to work out the price before you talk to anyone
  • You want open source that cannot be repriced out from under you

Before you switch.
